A revolution is sprouting
Food security is about connecting local farmers, urban farmers and backyard gardeners with eaters to strengthen the local food economy, wherever “local” is for us. A strong local food economy consists of a network of growers large and small, a variety of shopping venues, committed consumers; and easy access to the necessary resources for all.
To that end, bDiggin is working to connect more growers with more eaters in more communities. Current, in progress, and upcoming projects include:
- resource library – food growing and marketing; farmers’ market cookbooks and other resources,
- creating our first official food garden collective,
- worldwide geo-tracking of farmers markets and food co-ops, and
- outreach programs for low-income populations.
What’s an urban farm?
…any plot of land, regardless of size, located within a metropolitan area that is used to produce food for sale, including residential yards, vacant lots, community garden plots, school yards, church yards, and rooftop gardens.
Food garden collectives
Many people grow food on small lots for themselves or immediate family. Many others would like to grow food, but have no immediate available space. Pooling these single producers together and creating yard-sharing programs to supply food for the larger community as part of a food garden collective is of particular interest. Turning the urban landscape into an inter-connected web of food is desirable from an environmental and economic standpoint. In the coming months, bDiggin will be exploring garden collectives and yard sharing.
